The Classic Choice of SEMI Round Shooting

Given the twin importance of stopping power and snipers, soldiers asked for an accurate 7.62 mm NATO caliber marksman’s weapon, that could also be used in a close urban fight. The American requirement for a new semi-automatic sniper system(SASS) was released at the end of 2004, In the end, the SASS contract was awarded in late September 2005 to Knight’s Armament Company of Titusville, FL, who submitted a modified version of the SR-25 rifle and adopted by the U.S. military following the 2005 US Army Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle (XM110 SASR) competition. It is the M110.

The M110 SASS was a highly-modified Armalite AR-10 offshoot but feature additional refinements instituted by KAC to maximize parts commonality with the AR-15 design, improve weapon reliability, and increase accuracy. with improved tactical functionality and logistical capabilities refined.

The muzzle of 20" barrel was capped by a slotted flash suppressor while support for an optional sound suppressor was noted. It dissipates the tell-tale blast, and eliminates the blatantly obvious cloud of dust that would otherwise rise off the ground in locations like Iraq and Afghanistan. The receiver, hand guard and heat shield all featured lengths of MIL-STD-1913 rail which allowed for use of various accessories to suite operator needs.

The weapon offers a higher rate of fire with semi-auto action, and 10 or 20-round magazines. featured a well-angled ergonomic pistol grip with the magazine well in its usual place ahead of the trigger group, has new ambidextrous features such as a double-sided magazine release, safety selector lever, and bolt catch.

The fixed stock was plastic to reduce weight and integrated to the receiver which housed the required internals. And the buttplate is adjustable for length of pull to match user preferences. Adjustment can be made without tools via a notched hand-tightened knob on the right-hand side of the stock, also features integral quick-detachable sling swivel sockets located on each side of the stock near the rear of the lower receiver.

The M110 SASS underwent final operational testing in May and June 2007 at Fort Drum, New York by a mix of Special Forces troops and Sniper trained soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division.

In April 2007, U.S. Army soldiers from Task Force Fury in Afghanistan were the first in a combat zone to receive the M110. The troops rated the weapon very highly, noting the quality of the weapon and its semi-automatic capabilities compared to the bolt-action M24. And the M110 was used operationally by the storied 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan. The 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge gave excellent penetrative capabilities at ranges beyond that of the standard 5.56mm assault rifles found in the US Army and the repeat-fire, semi-automatic function allowed for quick-reaction/quick-strike abilities not found with the M24 SWS. The United States Marine Corps will also be adopting the M110 to replace some M39 EMR and all Mk 11 as a complement to the M40A5.
